Gruha Jyothi Free Units Calculator 2026: Your Limit, Zero Bill or Extra Units

Gruha Jyothi does not give everyone 200 free units. Your free limit is your average monthly use in April 2022 to March 2023 plus 10 units (or plus 10% if the average was above 90 units*), never more than 200. A home that averaged 80 units gets 90 free units; one that averaged 150 gets about 165. If you use more than your limit you pay for the extra units, and if you cross 200 units in a month you pay the full bill. Enter your average below.

Until January 2024 everyone got average + 10%. The state cabinet then gave a flat 10 extra units instead; most reports say this applies to homes averaging up to 90 units, while one report says it applies to all*. Our tool shows both where they differ.

Why your bill is not zero

  • You used more than your free limit: you pay for the extra units (and the fixed charge on that part*).
  • You crossed 200 units in a month: the whole month is billed.
  • Your Aadhaar is linked to two or more meters: only one home meter per person is covered.
  • You moved house and did not re-link the new RR / account number on the Gruha Jyothi site (tenants can apply with their own Aadhaar for the meter they use).
  • The connection is commercial or for a second home: only domestic, own-use homes are covered.

How to check status and your average

  1. Open the Gruha Jyothi page on the Seva Sindhu / ESCOM site and choose “Check status” (or ask your BESCOM / MESCOM / HESCOM / GESCOM / CESC office).
  2. Enter your account ID (RR number) from the bill; the status shows “eligible”, your average and the free units.
  3. Your bill also prints the Gruha Jyothi free units and the amount waived.
  4. Not linked yet? Apply on Seva Sindhu with Aadhaar, account ID and mobile number; there is no fee*.

Tips to stay inside the limit

  • A 5-star fridge and LED bulbs save 15-25 units a month in most homes.
  • Geysers (2 kW) use about 1 unit per 30 minutes; a timer helps.
  • Summer months push many homes over the limit: watch the meter in March-May.
  • If your family has grown, the limit does not change; only the 2022-23 average counts.
